Shotguns by John Biggers
I've loved John Biggers since the first time I saw an image of his 1987 painting titled Shotguns. I have a copy from a magazine taped to a wall where I can see it from my computer. Recently I had the idea that I'd love to someday own the original.
I googled it and found that it was sold at auction for $216,000 on 8 October 2009 (lot #102) - about the time my desire for it increased(?) I also learned that for years it had been in the possession of the patron who originally purchased it from the artist. Why did the person sell it? What will I have to do to get it? That last questions makes me want to write a short story or two about the possibilities.
His original work is available at
Essie Green Galleries in Harlem. They "concentrate on the sale of work by the senior Black Masters". New York, NY &
Michael Rosenfeld Art, New York City.
What does any of this have to do with feminist art? Well, I think John Biggers' work has a decidely feminist bend. It's not just that he often depicts women.
to do: get the catalog - it was an auction of African American art.
