Gluten Free Cooking Can Be Simple and Enjoyable
Why bother with gluten free cooking? Different women could want to
cook gluten free for different reasons. You may have celiac disease or
other digestive issues. You may have a child or significant other who
is gluten intolerant. You may suspect that gluten could be at the root
of your fibroids or other health problems. You could have a combination
of reasons.
What matters most is that, once you determine you have the
need for gluten free cooking, you learn to do it as effortlessly and
enjoyably as possible. Eating should be simple. Meals should be a time
for relaxation and conversation.
I think of gluten free cooking as an adventure because you
have to use new things. No, you don't need a new kitchen. Well, maybe
you can leverage your need to cook differently into an excuse to
remodel. What you will need is an adventurous attitude. You're going to
be rethinking what you eat and how you prepare meals. And of course you
need the right foods for gluten free cooking.
Getting Started With Gluten Free Food
You may as well know upfront that breads and pastas made without gluten
have a different taste and texture than the “regular” versions. Many of
them are very tasty. They just don't taste the same as the one's you're
use to. So try to judge them based on their own merits.
You
started your cooking adventure as soon as you acknowledged a need to
erase gluten from your life. Proceed slowly with some no-cook cooking. Buy cereal that announces its gluten status. It's important that the products you choose state that they are indeed gluten free.
Wheat
free is not the same thing. And just because a product is made with a
grain or other ingredient that is naturally free of gluten does not
mean the product itself is safe. Rice cereals, for example, could be
made on the same factory line with wheat cereals and thereby become
contaminated.
Healthy Woman You Are On Track
In
case you've forgotten, let me remind you of why we're going through all
these changes. For various reason each of us has a desire to eat gluten
free. Besides being healthy, we want, and need cooking to be simple,
delicious, and affordable.
Now
that we've acknowledged our gluten free needs and desires, let's get to
cooking. Oh, wait! We have to go shopping for the right ingredients.
More than likely, if you're new to this, none of the bread, pasta,
mixes, sauces, cereals, or prepackaged meals in your kitchen will be
gluten free.
But don't throw it all away. After reading the
labels make a gift bag of unopened products and take it to a local food
closet or to a neighbor. You may need to repeat this read, purge, shop,
give-away process a few times before your kitchen is ready for totally
gluten free cooking.
